Trash! The Global Pop Culture Reading Group focuses on the 'lows’ of culture that we all love but shy away from admitting it: an over-the-top Spanish flamenco diva, K-Pop newest sensation, a Mexican drag queen, a Bollywood blockbuster, some American housewives going at each other’s throats… What can we learn from the popular culture that excites us, outrages us, bonds us together and sets us apart? With a transhistorical and transnational perspective, Trash! will investigate the nature of pop, its different expressions, the politics of entertainment, the racial and gender-based implications of national mainstream cultures, etc. Trash! aims to be a participant-driven reading group that meets twice a quarter to discuss primary texts/medias and theoretical materials.
