Iberian and Latin American Cultures
The Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures at ËØÈËÉ«ÇéƬ has long been recognized as a leader in the development of groundbreaking approaches to the literature and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula, Spanish America, Brazil, Lusophone Africa, and Latinx communities in the United States. With world-renowned and actively engaged specialists in a variety of areas and periods, the Department offers innovative courses and programs that help students to meet and exceed their intellectual and professional goals.
The Department is committed to three main educational goals: 1) to provide contextualized knowledge of the literatures and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula from the medieval period to the present, of the Spanish-speaking communities of Latin America from the colonia period to the present, of Portuguese-speaking communities throughout the world, and of the Spanish-speaking communities of the United States, allowing students to specialize in one or several of these fields; 2) to prepare undergraduate students for advanced study in those areas and/or in a range of professional fields involving deep cultural expertise and linguistic fluency; and 3) to train doctoral students as first-rate research scholars and teachers, in preparation for careers as university faculty or in related roles within and outside of academia. In each of these areas, the faculty of the Department is committed to providing students with a nearly unprecedented level of mentoring and support.
The Department awards a Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) in either Iberian and Latin American Cultures or Spanish, and we also offer undergraduate minors in Portuguese and Spanish. For graduate students, we award a one-year terminal Master of Arts (M.A.) in Iberian and Latin American Cultures as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Iberian and Latin American Cultures.
