This ILAC grad-student curated series hosts emerging scholars who present on their work and discuss professional development in today's academia. Participants are tenure-track faculty who are kick-starting their careers in the US, Europe, and Latin America. These talks will be mostly in Spanish.

The Translational Turn
New Horizons in Iberian Studies
The particular role of translation as an activity of intercultural mediation makes it an ideal ground to study cross-cultural dynamics (center-center, center-periphery and trans-peripheral contacts), while challenging traditional ideas and notions that have shaped the study of national literatures for decades. In recent years, a new turn in the field of Iberian Studies has been observed: translation emerges here as a fruitful area to delve into aspects that lie at the core of the Iberian comparatism, e.g. cultural interactions, literary mutual influences and convergences, but also power struggle and relations of tension, competition or rivalry. However, the study of translation not only raises interesting new research questions that can expand the horizon of Iberian Studies. It also calls for other theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches that need to be taken into account, as Mario Santana (forthcoming) points out. In this talk I would like to address some of these aspects and present what I have elsewhere called the ‘translational turn’ in Iberian Studies (Gimeno Ugalde 2021). After a brief introduction to this turn, I will illustrate it with some recent works and projects carried out by the IberTranslatio research group (Universidade de Lisboa), as well as with my own research which can be placed in a new epistemological and disciplinary ‘contact zone’, Iberian Translation Studies. I will conclude with a short work-in-progress discussion about my current book project, part of which I have been writing during my Visiting Fellowship at ËØÈËÉ«ÇéƬ.
